Beginners Yoga: Avoid Pain

Yoga should never be painful. It’s not a “no pain no gain” method of exercise. As you become more accustomed to the various yoga poses, you’ll be able to take them deeper, however you should always stop before you experience pain. In beginners yoga, your instructor will tell you to stop before you reach your pain threshold. You will know when this occurs. Remember that in yoga you’re never in competition with anyone, not even yourself. There is no benefit to yoga at all if you perform a yoga pose to the point of pain, because your muscles contract, and this can cause you an injury. Even if it doesn’t cause you an injury a contracted muscle means that the blood is not flowing as it should, and you’re getting no benefits.
