Walking Fast And Heart Disease
February 9th, 2010 by admin
A recent study shows that older people who walk slowly are three times as likely to die from heart problems as those who walk briskly. The findings emphasise the link between exercise and heart disease. Conducted over the course of five years the study found that those who walked faster were much less likely to die, especially from heart diseases and problems, than slow walkers. Walking quickly has been shown to increase levels of “good” cholesterol in the blood, which in turn can reduce the chances of suffering from heart disease. The men were judged to be speedy walkers if they walk more than 1.85 metres a second and slow if they walked just 1.5 metres a second. Women were fast walkers if they walk at 1.5 metres a second and slow if they walk at less than 1.35 metres.
